You can fly us to The Moon, but the only stars here are the two on the front plaque. This affordable hotel is pretty basic, but consider the following: Rue de la Montagne, on which it is situated, is lined with restaurants and leads directly to the Grand Place.

The Moon’s 17 rooms are modest and clean. A recent renovation saw new hardwood flooring and a fresh coat of paint in every room. The wooden furniture isn’t flashy, but is tastefully simple and comfortable. The new color scheme includes dark blue—somewhat lunar, one could say. Some rooms look out to the tourists clicking away on the busy street, while others have dismal views of another building’s ventilation system. Keep in mind this is a budget establishment (read: amenities are scarce), but Wi-Fi is free throughout.

In lieu of toiletries, you’ll have an institutional soap dispenser in your shower. But, tiny as they may be, the shower and toilet in each room are clean and functional.

You may need to overlook the hallway, which is reminiscent of a 1970s college dorm—narrow, carpeted and dark. Let’s face it: This isn’t the kind of hotel where you’ll want to linger, but its clean rooms and a central location make the Moon a good place for the energetic city adventurer to sleep and store luggage.

Breakfast is included.

Grote Markt, Grand Place, or whatever you want to call it, this impressive square facing the medieval Town Hall (built in 1402), is the undisputed tourist epicenter of Brussels. The surrounding neighborhood—sprinkled with hotels, cutesy cafés, restaurants and chocolate shops—draws throngs of shutter-happy tourists day after day.

A maze of cobblestoned alleys radiating from the square leads to the opera house, a commercial drag or the gay district, depending on which turn you take. Ornate guild houses, sidewalk cafés and souvenir shops crowd the neighborhood, making it a lively place around the clock.
