Paris: More budget hotels with great locations
The search for affordable hotels in Paris often leaves travelers fearing that they’ll have to settle for something with a lousy location, perhaps along the outskirts of town or in the suburbs. Not true, dear Cheapos.
Last week I wrote a column for the Huffington Post about budget hotels in Paris with fabulous locations, all of which have been visited, inspected and approved by EuroCheapo’s editors. Here are some of the hotels listed in the article, plus a few more picks that deserve to be added to the list.
For more options, check out our list of recommended hotels in Paris and guide to choosing a neighborhood in Paris.
On the islands:
Hotel Henri IV
Doubles from $73
You really can’t get more central than a hotel on the Place Dauphine, at the tip of the Ile de la Cité. The Henri IV offers very simple rooms (we’d even say “bare basic”) in a 17-century building with a royal past.
In the Marais:
Grand Hotel du Loiret
Doubles from $100
4th arrondissement
The Grand Hotel du Loiret is located in the heart of the Marais, just one block from the the Hotel de Ville. The hotel provides all the basics, including renovated rooms with free Wi-Fi and private bathrooms. However, the location, steps from the neighborhood’s restaurants and bars, makes it an ideal home base for those looking to spend some serious time in the Marais.
Hotel de Nice
Doubles from $139
4th arrondissement
If we mention the Hotel du Loiret in the Marais, we must also include the Hotel de Nice, located just around the corner.
The Nice may be a bit pricier than the Loiret, but its location is perhaps a touch better, too, as it overlooks a peaceful, restaurant-lined square, across the rue de Rivoli from the Hotel de Ville. A great base.
In the Latin Quarter:
Hotel Esmeralda
Doubles from $119
5th arrondissement
The Eseralda has been one of our favorite (and most popular) hotels for more than a decade. The hotel sits along the Left Bank in the Latin Quarter, directly across the Seine from Notre Dame. Many rooms have direct, jaw-dropping views of the cathedral. As for the hotel itself, it’s a fun, funky old place and would be a pick even without the views!
Hotel Cluny Sorbonne
Doubles from $88
5th arrondissement
The Cluny-Sorbonne sits directly across a tiny Latin Quarter street from the University of Paris, Sorbonne. Rooms are pretty simply, but all are equipped with private bathrooms and have free Wi-Fi.
Hotel du Commerce
Doubles from $68
5th arrondissement
Located a few blocks from the Cluny-Sorbonne in the Latin Quarter, the Hotel du Commerce offers very simple rooms upstairs with a shared kitchen and eating table downstairs. This layout is especially convenient given the thrice-weekly food market at the Place Maubert, just steps away.
Delhy’s Hotel
Doubles from $79
6th arrondissement
While we’re in the Latin Quarter, we should add the Delhy’s, which offers basic, clean rooms in a century’s old building just west of Place St-Michel. The hotel’s pedestrian-only street, in fact, is one of the most charming things about the hotel, and lends it a “hidden” quality.
In the 6th:
Hotel Saint Andre des Arts
Doubles from $121
6th arrondissement
Situated along the cute (although heavily touristed) rue St-Andre-des-Arts in the 6th arrondissement, this hotel is an old-school cheapo, offering charming rooms with wood-beamed ceilings in a 16th-century building.
We’re big fans (especially of the friendly couple who run the hotel), although some will find the location too popular with other tourists.
Résidence du Palais
Doubles from $82
6th arrondissement
We first visited this hotel back in January and were floored that it had somehow escaped our “Cheapo radar” all these years. The Résidence du Palais is situated in an apartment building just across the street from the Jardin du Luxembourg. This location is ideal for those who want to be near the park, the cafes of Montparnasse and St-Germain-des-Pres.
Near Grands Boulevards:
Hotel Chopin
Doubles from $129
9th arrondissement
With a location at the end of a darling 19th-century arcade lined with precious stores, this guesthouse could have called itself the Hotel “Shoppin’.” (Sorry.) Rooms are sweet and old-fashioned, and the breakfast is bountiful. But it’s the tucked away setting that will appeal to romantics.
Hotel des Boulevards
Doubles from $69
2nd arrondissement
The Hotel des Boulevards’ location just south of the Grands Boulevards, is ideal for those who plan to take advantage of the clubs and bars in the 9th arrondissement. It’s a trendy area, although a bit out of the way if you’re only concerned about hitting up museums and more central sights.
Near Montmartre:
Ermitage Sacre Coeur
Doubles from $120
18th arrondissement
If you’re a fan of Sacre Coeur and don’t mind trekking up there every night, you can sleep in a mansion-turned-guesthouse just minutes from the basilica. The classy Ermitage is located on the same street as the church, and offers inspiring views over the city from many of its lovely rooms.
