Pension Pharmador, tucked away in the gritty neighborhood of Neubau, is an urban oasis. From the beautiful courtyard bursting with sculptures and plants to the spacious rooms available for a song, the Pharmador is a great choice for visitors on a budget.

We can think of one downside: location. Pharmador is distant from the action. Getting to Innere Stadt is a quick trip with the U-Bahn but it takes 30 or 40 minutes on foot. If distance from the action is not a concern, Pharmador is a superb value. Besides, the busy Mariahilferstrasse, with its shops and restaurants, is only a five-minute walk away.

The 21 rooms are big and uncluttered, though they can feel a bit dark on overcast days. Doubles are quite large, big enough to fit dark wood tables and desks with vanity mirrors. Rooms have cable television and minibars. Bathrooms (all en suite) have navy blue tiles and shower/tub combinations that are above average in size at this price point.

We love the classical sculptures in the stairways, similar to those outside. (That courtyard isn't just for show, as it's also a free parking area.) Internet is available for free at a station for guests to use, and there's free Wi-Fi. We found the staff to be exceedingly friendly and willing to organize trips for guests or make recommendations. The organic breakfast spread of fruits and juices also struck us as a truly fab touch.

Neubau

Neubau is Vienna's nightlife epicenter, a recently gentrified area that still retains a lot of grit despite its nightly metamorphosis into party central. Located north of Mariahilf, the shopping options may seem paltry in comparison, though the dearth of shopping opportunities are mitigated by the expansive, recently birthed Museumsquartier. Home to 60,000 square feet of art and culture, the Museumsquartier includes the museums of modern art and architecture.

And there are certainly opportunities to consume here. Neubau is one of the best places in the city to shop for antiques.
