Petite Auberge

A little piece of the French countryside has set down roots just a few blocks from Union Square, and its name is the Petite Auberge. This three-star gem is on the higher end of the cheapo spectrum but its charm and thoughtful extras make it worth a splurge.

It’s French Provencale all the way here. The hotel’s 26 rooms are papered in bright florals, with dainty sheer curtains and an array of antique furnishings like large oak armoires, intricately carved wooden headboards and sweet writing desks. Carefully chosen trinkets make appearances on built-in shelves in some rooms. All rooms are outfitted with a television, phone and free Wi-Fi, and most have a working fireplace to cozy up to in those cool San Francisco summers.

The floral theme continues to the small private bathrooms, with wood-framed mirrors and small standing sinks. A handful of rooms have stall showers while the rest have showers and tub combos. All bathrooms offer toiletries, a hair dryer and fluffy bathrobes.

Overall, the hotel gives the feeling of luxurious escape. Our adventure started the moment we stepped through the beveled glass doors. In the lavender-scented lobby we were impressed by the pale yellow wallpaper, terracotta floors, wrought iron chandeliers and the soft hum of French music (plus a jar of complimentary homemade cookies).

On the basement level is a parlour with comfy couches by the fireplace and cheerful prints hanging on floral wallpaper. Afternoon tea and cookies are offered here, and guests mingle nightly from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. over wine and appetizers. Breakfast, included in the room rate is served in a rustic breakfast room with wooden tables and chairs, a colorful mural and French doors opening onto a small patio. Coffee, tea, waters and sodas are also complimentary throughout the day.

Additional services, including a front desk safe and computer station, are available at The White Swan, a sister property located next door. Note that the Petite Auberge reception is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. but the reception next door is 24 hours.
