The Piazza della Repubblica has served as Florence’s beating heart since Roman times when it was the site of the town’s Roman forum. During Medieval times, two major thoroughfares met here and it developed into the city's commercial hub. It later became the site of Florence's Jewish Ghetto, mandated by Cosimo Medici.

Today, the square plays home to street performers, children riding its carousel, and an impressive lineup of old-fashioned Florentine cafes.
