The one-star Rembrandt Square Hotel offers well-kept rooms that overlook club- and bar-packed Rembrandt Square. If you’re coming to Amsterdam to party and don’t mind hearing music late into the night in your room, you'll appreciate what this budget hotel offers.

The décor in the 21 rooms is straightforward—a dash of blue or green on the walls (painted with the word “Rembrandt Square”), along with basic writing desks, chairs, and simple beds. Some rooms look out over the lively Rembrandtplein and its many bars and clubs. (Note that these rooms will pick up noise from the bars downstairs, which keeps thumping until 5 a.m. Light sleepers should ask for a room overlooking the back, or go elsewhere.)

Rooms are in pretty good shape for a budget hotel, and are equipped with a flat-screen TV, coffee/tea kettle, and free Wi-Fi. All rooms have a sink, while the cheapest rooms share bathrooms in the hallway (five rooms share two bathrooms on each floor), and more expensive rooms have their own private bathroom.

Breakfast is included in the room rate. Note that, as is typical in Amsterdam, the Rembrandt Square Hotel has a jaw-droppingly steep staircase and does not have an elevator.

1.1km to city center

The most elegant area within the city center, Grachtengordel South (also referred to as the "Southern Canal Ring") features opulent residences, mansion-lined streets and a hot nightlife scene. The area boasts both Rembrandtplein (the city's one-time butter market) and Leidseplein (a former horse and buggy drop-off point). Both squares have been reborn as hot spots for bars, clubs, restaurants and no small number of tourist traps.

Choosing a hotel in the Southern Canal Ring will make things convenient when visiting Amsterdam, as you'll be close enough to the train station, and within an easy walk of most of the city's big sights. You should also consider hotels in the Western Canal Ring (or "Grachtengordel West"), which tends to be quieter.
