When it comes to car rentals, Florence is no different than most of our other cities. Read: We don’t recommend renting a car here. Full stop. The streets are small and touch to navigate, the drivers can be a bit erratic and hey, in such a gorgeous (and walkable!) city, who wants to be stressed behind the wheel? That said, a car might be helpful for day trips into surrounding Tuscan towns, so here’s what you need to know about acquiring one.
In order to drive in Italy, you must be over 18. This is seldom the final word on the matter, however, as most rental car agencies require drivers to be 23. An International Driving Permit is recommended for driving in Italy, but it is not required.
Car rentals in Italy are pricey. Why? Insuring against theft and accidents is more expensive in Italy than in most other Western European countries. Your best bet for a cheap rate is to reserve a car in your home country before arriving in Italy. Cars with automatic transmission cost twice as much as standard manuals. Additionally, automatics are hard to find in Italy.
But there is hope! To find the cheapest price on rental cars in Florence (and Italy), we recommend Auto Europe. EuroCheapo has partnered with Auto Europe to offer the guaranteed best prices on rental cars in Italy. (To read more about cheap car rentals in Europe click here.) A good rate for a three-day economy car rental originating and terminating in Florence is €135.
Some car rental packages include unlimited kilometers, others don't. Some have insurance against theft or collision. Others don't. Generally, be sure to ask details about insurance and accidents, as plans vary. Sometimes paying cash makes a difference in insurance coverage. Check with your credit card company to see if purchasing your rental with your credit card will provide you with insurance automatically. And, based on our own experiences, we strongly recommend obtaining an insurance policy that includes roadside assistance.
