Within the city of Nice itself, a rental car makes little sense. Not only is public transportation superb, but the town is so small that most places of interest (the beach and the Old Town, primarily) are within easy walking distance.

Renting a car along the Côte d'Azur is a good idea if you plan to explore little hillside villages and vistas off the public transportation grid (check out our day trips guide for ideas. Those choosing this option should be forewarned that adngerous curves of mountainous roads will greet them along the Riviera.

Most car rental agencies only require a valid driver license and one year of driving experience. The minimum age to rent a car in France is 21. However, many agencies will not rent to anyone under 23. Renters under 25 often pay a surcharge.
