The 20-room Rex Petit is housed in the basement of the pricier Rex Hotel. With a quiet location near Stockholm's business district and brand spanking new rooms, the two-star hotel is a solid Cheapo pick.

Opened in 2009, the Rex Petit was quite an ambitious construction project. It was worth it: the smallish guestrooms have plenty of amenities—including TV and phone—and unique décor ranging from modern Scandinavian to rustic medieval. All but four rooms are equipped with private baths. However, one thing the rooms are not equipped with is windows—don't stay here if you're hoping to gaze at the city's famous church spires from your guestroom bed.

Give its reasonable rates, beautiful rooms, and access to the Rex, the Rex Petit is, we believe, one of the best deals in Stockholm. Unfortunately, we’re not alone in thinking that: You’ll need to book well in advance to snag a room.

Norrmalm

Busy and hectic, Norrmalm is characterized by the lively Drottninggatan, Stockholm's Central Station, and a veritable slew of cultural facilities. Kulturhuset, St. Jacobs Church, the Royal Opera, Sweden House, and several appealing parks crowd into Norrmalm.

The neighborhood's very modern heart is crowded with all sorts of retail shops, Stockholm's big department stores, and, to the south on a detached island, the national Parliament. While tourists are an unavoidable part of the Norrmalm picture, the vast majority of the crowds surrounding you here are residents. Norrmalm is the beating heart of today's Stockholm.
