It doesn’t get any more central than the 15-room Résidence Le Quinze, which literally sits on the extravagant Grande Place. The only hotel located directly on the historic central square, this is an affordable hotel with a five-star view.

The elaborate façade, which is designated historic, looks medieval and is dotted with original architectural details. Inside, the rooms—nay, chambers—come with high ceilings, old-fashioned chandeliers and decorative fireplaces. Modern furniture is paired with hardwood floors for a clean look. The vintage photos of Brussels cityscapes add a classic feel. The rooms, all equipped with a television, mini-fridge and telephone, and the bathrooms are beautifully renovated.

Some rooms look directly onto the Grande Place, affording a dramatic view of the city hall, day and night. The panoramic view doesn’t come cheaply, though, and the front-facing rooms can be sometimes twice as expensive as the back rooms. Résidence Le Quinze offers a lovely stay and the staff is helpful and unpretentious—a bit of a surprise, given the prime location.

The included breakfast is served in the adjoining pub.

Grote Markt, Grand Place, or whatever you want to call it, this impressive square facing the medieval Town Hall (built in 1402), is the undisputed tourist epicenter of Brussels. The surrounding neighborhood—sprinkled with hotels, cutesy cafés, restaurants and chocolate shops—draws throngs of shutter-happy tourists day after day.

A maze of cobblestoned alleys radiating from the square leads to the opera house, a commercial drag or the gay district, depending on which turn you take. Ornate guild houses, sidewalk cafés and souvenir shops crowd the neighborhood, making it a lively place around the clock.
