Located in central Florence and about a 15-minute walk from the Duomo, the Basilica of Santa Croce is the largest Franciscan church in the world. It has a whopping 16 chapels and features well-restored frescoes by Giotto.
The Basilica serves as the burial place for some of Italy’s most famous residents including Machiavelli, Galileo and Michelangelo.
Today you can visit the church, its chapels and the bell tower. Note that there is no elevator and it’s 90 steps to the top of the tower. The church is open to visitors Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 5:30 and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission charges vary.
