It seems like every time we visit the Ibis Styles Milano Centro (formerly Hotel Serena), it has something snazzy and new to offer. The three-star property may reside in a four-story palazzo, but inside, time speeds up full force. A massive, curved staircase makes for a stunning first impression, and white walls and a minimalist reception area make the hotel seem a bit like a museum.

Upstairs, the Ibis Styles Milano Centro’s guestrooms are well-proportioned and bright, with sun pouring in from all sides. Rooms are chic and modern, primarily dressed in gray yet complemented by rich hues of maroon, indigo and neon green. Many boast views of the expansive courtyard below.

All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, soundproof windows, a TV and telephone. The private bathrooms are pristine and adorned in gray tiling. We loved the hotel's top-floor breakfast room, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and magnificent views over area rooftops. The owners informed us that this room may disappear during upcoming renovations, but we’re sure the new summit will be even better than ever. Breakfast is included in the room rate. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Milan’s main train station is not located in the prettiest part of town, and you may spot a few (or several) unsavory characters around here. That said, the area between the station and Corso Buenos Aires is plenty safe, and it’s home to several perfectly adequate hotels—many with rock-bottom rates. You’re also, of course, well situated for getting around the city, and Corso Buenos Airesis home to some of the city’s best shopping.
