Aside from its jaw-droppingly low rates, the best thing about the simple, one-star St. Marks Hotel is likely the location, next to countless gritty East Village attractions. Here unfussy travelers will find clean if basic, accommodations in a historic setting and at reasonable rates.
Many of St. Mark’s 70 rooms are quite small, although they are by no means tiny for Manhattan. Things are simple: Wooden bed frames and wardrobes, with beige walls.
All rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with telephones and flat-panel TVs with DVD players. Bathrooms are private and feature smart checkered tiles. (Hair dryers are available upon request.)
Wi-Fi is available for free. Note that the hotel does not have an elevator and that the St. Mark’s Hotel accepts cash and traveler's checks only. Discounts are available for longer stays.
Location
Outside the doors of the St. Marks Hotel lies the pandemonium of St. Mark’s Place, the epicenter of New York’s alternakid scene in all of its pierced, tattooed and grungy glory. Yet inside the hotel, an almost sedate atmosphere predominates.
The East Village is home to a plethora of delicious food joints, including one of our favorite little Japanese holes-in-the-wall. Among the many nearby drinking establishments, none has a hoppier history than McSorley’s Old Ale House around the corner on East 7th Street. Affordable ethnic restaurants attract early 20-somethings, especially students at NYU.
The hotel is also a short walk to Greenwich Village and SoHo to the west or Union Square to the north.

3.2km to city centerThe down and dirty East Village really isn't so down and dirty anymore. It used to be New York City's troubled teen—a hub for bad-boy rock-and-rollers and other rabble-rousers. But things took a turn in the late '80s and '90s as the city cleaned up.
Now it's all about NYU students, quirky shops, cheap food, raucous pubs, and sleek little bars. There's still a little edge left to the East Village. St. Marks Place, for example, has its share of dive bars. Traces of the neighborhood's Ukrainian community remain, there's a cluster of back-to-back Indian restaurants, and quite a few eateries catering to Japanese expats.
A few budget hotel options in the East Village exist, although the area has never really catered to visitors. You'll have many more accommodation options if you wander a bit west (into Greenwich Village) or north into the Union Square neighborhood.
Other nearby neighborhoods:
• Lower East Side
• Greenwich Village / West Village
• Union Square / Gramercy
