Situated very near both the Santa Maria Novella church and Florence's main train station, the Tourist House Bed and Breakfast is a small, no-frills spot that keeps its rates very low by providing only the essentials. The hotel isn't a great option for demanding guests, but it makes a lot of sense for easygoing budget travelers (especially those who want to be near the station).

Nine rooms, divided between the first and second floor of an old building (without elevator), are spacious, simple and colorful. Furniture is utilitarian, walls are bright and decorated with the occasional painting or frilly touch. Each room is outfitted with air conditioning (great for keeping the mosquitoes at bay) and a flat-screen TV.

Private baths are equipped with showers and hairdryers.

Breakfast is included and is served on an outdoor terrace in spring and summer. Free Wi-Fi is available in the common areas only.

Santa Maria Novella

Across the street from the train station, the area around Piazza Santa Maria Novella is perhaps the most varied neighborhood in the city. The somewhat frantic streets leading to the station get a lot of traffic (both automobile and human), while the other side of the grassy Piazza is formed by narrow, serpentine little streets, characterful buildings and top-notch shopping.

The 'hood is bordered by the river, the train station and the shopping street Via Tornabuoni. As such, this area suffers a bit of an identity crisis. One thing is for sure: once you're here, you're no more than ten-minutes away from anything else.

Sleeping near Santa Maria Novella is a no-brainer for travelers looking for quick-and-easy access to the train station at any hour. Booking a hotel in the area's eastern edges places you basically in the center of town.
