With over 25,000 students, the University of Zurich is the country's largest university. Although the university has several buildings, its home base is situated on Ramistrasse near the University Hospital just north of Altstadt.

Established in 1833, the school is known for being “everyone’s university,” as it offers a number of public institutions including hospitals, libraries, galleries and museums. The university expanded from a theology school founded by famed 16th-century Protestant Reformation pastor Huldrych Zwingli, making it the first university in Europe to be founded by a state rather than by a church or monarch.
