Housed in a 19th-century townhouse on a leafy corner near the Rijksmuseum, the two-star Washington Hotel is a bit unpredictable, with some charming touches, some scuffs, and rooms for a range of budgets.

The Washington is comprised of two connected buildings. The building on the left has 10 newly renovated rooms, with new carpets, fresh furnishings and new beds. Meanwhile, rooms on the right side have not been renovated in quite some time, but, in their defense, have some quirky and old-fashioned touches, like vintage wallpaper and antiques (along with thin carpets and some scuffs on the walls).

All rooms are equipped with a phone, kettle, flat-screen TV and safe. Both the private and shared bathrooms are ample and clean. Some baths in the unrenovated rooms sport cool red tiles that must have landed in the rooms sometime in the ‘70s.

So is it a good deal? It’s a bit hard to say, as the rates change quite drastically depending on availability and season. However, it’s worth considering.

The hotel offers free Wi-Fi. Furthermore, a continental breakfast is sometimes included in the rates, but not always.

Note that the hotel has steep stairs and does not have an elevator.

2.1km to city center

The most popular neighborhood outside the city center, the Museumplein is a residential area crowded with museums, parks and 19th-century buildings. The Rijksmuseum possesses an impressive collection of Dutch paintings from the 15th through the 17th centuries (including an enormous Rembrandt collection), the Van Gogh Museum is (surprise) devoted to Van Gogh, and the Stedelijk Museum houses modern and contemporary art. Meanwhile, the nearby Concertgebouw offers world class concerts at reasonable ticket prices.

The vast green space that is Vondelpark was the celebrated playground of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll in the 1970s. Today, however, Museumplein & Vondelpark is an upscale commercial area, full of pricey little boutiques and shops.

Sleeping near the museums and Vondelpark is a great option for travelers who expect to spend a lot of time taking in the city's art, concert, and shopping options. The area is a quick tram ride straight south through the city center from the central train station, while most of the city's main tourist sights can be reached by foot.
