An inarguably good value, the Waterloo House is a Ballsbridge B&B in a class of its own among Dublin’s budget-friendly inns. Rates are decent and décor is well considered.
The Waterloo House’s 17 guestrooms tend toward the compact. They’re beautifully decorated in a period manner: cheery yellow walls, overstuffed chairs and fleur-de-lis patterned wall-to-wall carpets. Duvets and throws are welcoming and pillows are thick. All rooms are equipped with coffee and tea facilities, a television and free Wi-Fi.
The private bathrooms manage that rare trick of feeling classic and modern at the same time. We loved their tiling, oval washbasins and large mirrors over the sinks. Some rooms feature bathtubs. Anyone needing a nightly soak would be advised to request one.
Narrow hallways bequeath the inn a stately atmosphere, as if Waterloo House were a country estate accidentally situated in the city. The garden in back adds to that feel.
Unlike many old Dublin hotels, the Waterloo House even has an elevator. But best of all, its rates are well below the average for a hotel of this caliber.
A downside for some would be the Waterloo House’s location, on a far-flung street just off Upper Baggot Street. But for prospective guests who enjoy walking, the inn’s 20-minute distance from St. Stephen’s Green won’t be a problem. There are also ample parking spots in front of the building and parking is free.
A full Irish breakfast is available for an additional fee. Wi-Fi is free, and the entire hotel is non-smoking.

Location: Very central
1.7km to city centerThe neighborhoods included in this designation are located outside central Dublin, but each has its own attractive qualities. Ballsbridge and Ranelegh, both just over the Grand Canal, are leafy, residential neighborhoods, for the most part. Ballsbridge also features a posh cluster of shops on Baggot Street Upper.
The Portobello area just north of the Grand Canal is, by way of contrast, funky. West of Richmond Street South is the hub of Dublin's Jewish community, and to the east of Richmond is a trove of ethnic shops and eateries. The overall vibe is intermittently scrappy and stately, a nice cross-section of Dublin culture. Finally, Smithfield is just west of Church Street and within easy walking distance of most sights.
