Although its rates are a smidge higher than many of the other hotels packing the streets around the train station, the family-run Welrome Hotel offers a list of extra amenities and thoughtful service that keeps guests coming back.
The Welrome Hotel, a two-star sleeper located near Termini Station, benefits from its owner Mary’s matronly care. Since 2000, she’s been offering advice, information and friendly conversation to help her guests enjoy Rome.
Each of her seven rooms is named after a Roman monument and are outfitted in tiled floors, a table and chairs, cream walls and green bedspreads. The “Colosseum” room boasts a small balcony which overlooks an internal courtyard. All rooms are air conditioned (a bonus, as the area can be a little noisy at night and you’ll want to keep the windows closed). In addition, all have a TV, telephone, safe, tea kettle, and a mini-fridge.
The private bathrooms are a pretty good size for Rome, and are equipped with a shower, bidet, hairdryer and toiletries.
This neighborhood has its advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, it’s cheap and convenient to the train station. On the other, even if it’s safe, it can seem a bit shady, especially at night.
The hotel does not offer breakfast, but there are many neighborhood cafés nearby.
As we note above, the Welrome does not offer online booking. To reserve a room, you’ll have to contact the hotel directly by email or telephone (see below). We recommend booking early, as the Welrome is small and well loved.

Location: Very central
1.9km to city centerIn its defense, the area north of Stazione Centrale Termini is both convenient and affordable. On the convenience front, trains heading to Fumincino airport and across Italy depart from this massive structure. The front of Termini is a tangle of bus stops, and Rome's two metro lines, as well as markets and shops.
That said, the area north of Termini is not the most picturesque area in central Rome by a long shot. The semi-circle of streets north of the station is bordered by the Piazza della Republica to the west and the Villa Borghese parkland to the north. In between are hundreds of hotels and very few tourist attractions. Although always crowded and sometimes a little seedy, there is an upside to this neighborhood. Lots of competition in every hotel budget category can make for good rates.
