Between low-cost air travel and express trains that charge extra fees, train travel in Europe has never seemed more, well, expensive. We don't like expensive, and dear Cheapos, neither do you.
The thing is that we love trains. Love them. There's nothing like train travel to focus a journey emotionally and geographically. We don't want to stop traveling by train in Europe. And they're just so romantic (plus you can even get rail discounts for couples!).
Luckily there are ways to squeeze maximum value out of train travel in Europe. Rail passes are usually a good bet for saving money on train travel. Additionally, they simplify train travel immeasurably. You've already got your ticket.
But rail passes aren't always the cheapest way to take trains in Europe. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets, just like the locals.
Also, keep in mind that even with the purchase of a train pass, you will often be required to purchase seat reservations and sometimes even pay a supplement. You'll need to research the fine print attached to any pass you are considering purchasing. Similarly, though, if you do your research it is possible to snag a deal.
So much to learn... which is why we wrote this guide. Welcome to EuroCheapo's guide to rail passes in Europe!
