Set on the ground floor of a gorgeous Art Deco townhouse, the Pension Majesty lives up to its name (as far as we’re concerned) with genteel rooms, turn-of-the-century flair and warm service.

Once the home of Nelly Sachs, the Berlin-born Jewish author who was awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize for Literature, the building has hosted a pension for decades. The Majesty is popular with travelers hankering for old-fashioned hospitality, and it also offers convenient access to the Savignyplatz S-Bahn.

Quick read

Pros: Convenient location. Clean and comfortable. Excellent value.

Cons: Wi-Fi is patchy. Limited reception hours.

Rooms

With only 12 singles and doubles, the Pension Majesty offers an intimate feel that larger hotels simply can’t offer. Well-lit rooms feature shiny hardwood floors and are in top shape. They are furnished with comfortable beds, side tables and a mirror and vanity. Tasteful artwork completes the look.

Some rooms are rather spacious, while others are quite small. Whatever their size, all rooms are equipped with a television (and no other amenities). The pension's only suite, which includes a terrace overlooking quiet Mommsenstrasse, could be worth the splurge, especially if you’re traveling in a group of three.

Bathrooms

The private bathrooms are tiny and basic but very clean.

Hotel

With its "fin de siècle" stained glass windows, the Pension Majesty’s petite breakfast room is a vision of loveliness. The period details continue out in the foyer, which is lit with stunning original light fixtures. Outside, along the surrounding streets, you’ll find one Art Noveau building after another.

Breakfast is available for an additional charge. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, although guests complain that the connection can be rather poor.

Note: This hotel was visited by a EuroCheapo editor and is recommended based on cleanliness, location, price and overall quality. EuroCheapo did not charge this hotel to be listed.

North of the Ku'Damm is the leafy, upper middle class hood of Charlottenburg. Residential and rich, Charlottenburg is full of relaxed little cafes. We love Charlottenburg for its friendly side streets, in particular those diagonal streets that host little mini-parks. We also like Charlottenburg's affordable little pensions and hotels, which are more prevalent than the neighborhood's well-heeled profile would suggest. While Charlottenburg is not as vibrant and exciting as the dynamic hoods to the east, it's reliable and safe, and at turns quite welcoming.
