Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo, short for Natura Artis Magistra (“Nature is the teacher of art”), offers an impressive array of outdoor zoological displays (polar bear swim anyone?) and 19th-century buildings housing nature exhibits.
Located in the Plantagebuurt, the expansive zoo today encompasses a planetarium, aquarium, butterfly garden as well as the main zoological museum.
Each year, September is known as “discount month” here. Ticket prices are slashed and locals flock to see the animals. It’s also fun to visit during feeding times. Check the zoo's Web site for more information.
Hotels near the Artis Zoo: The Plantagebuurt is just east of Amsterdam’s city center and offers a solid variety of budget hotels and in a relatively quiet part of town. From here, it’s a ten-minute walk to most main attractions.
