Tucked into the northern tip of the Vondelpark, a quick hop across the canal from the bar- and club-packed Leidseplein, the StayOkay Vondelpark is a clean, cheap and professionally run operation. And with rates that are some of the lowest in central Amsterdam, it’s easy to see why it appeals to students, families and other budget travelers.

The hostel is massive, with 536 beds spanning three different buildings (one of which is a former school). Room configurations range from small doubles and quads to dorms sleeping six, eight, 10 and more. Regardless of their size, all rooms are furnished with metal or wooden beds, plus a dresser and a table and chair. (Note that most beds are bunks, although some doubles have twin beds. However, no double beds are available.)

Importantly, all rooms are equipped with their own private shower and toilet. Thus, the smaller your room, the easier it will be to use the bathroom!

Downstairs, the StayOkay provides lockers, vending machines, laundry services and a game room. A breakfast buffet (with hot drinks, juices, breads, cereals, meats and cheeses) is available for an additional fee.

Museums & Vondelpark

The most popular neighborhood outside the city center, the Museumplein is a residential area crowded with museums, parks and 19th-century buildings. The Rijksmuseum possesses an impressive collection of Dutch paintings from the 15th through the 17th centuries (including an enormous Rembrandt collection), the Van Gogh Museum is (surprise) devoted to Van Gogh, and the Stedelijk Museum houses modern and contemporary art. Meanwhile, the nearby Concertgebouw offers world class concerts at reasonable ticket prices.

The vast green space that is Vondelpark was the celebrated playground of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll in the 1970s. Today, however, Museumplein & Vondelpark is an upscale commercial area, full of pricey little boutiques and shops.

Sleeping near the museums and Vondelpark is a great option for travelers who expect to spend a lot of time taking in the city's art, concert, and shopping options. The area is a quick tram ride straight south through the city center from the central train station, while most of the city's main tourist sights can be reached by foot.
