Located near the heart of the trendy Pijp neighborhood, the Bicycle Hotel is cheap and cheerful, with low rates, a friendly staff, and inexpensive bike rentals for guests.

The hotel’s 16 rooms are basic and no-frills. Some have narrow bunk beds looking out onto a pleasant garden, while others offer double beds with a view of the quiet Van Ostadestraat. All are equipped with a television and free Wi-Fi, while a few have a balcony (ask ahead).

Some rooms have a private bathroom, but most share clean and efficient showers and toilets in the hallway. Rooms with shared bath are equipped with their own sink and mirror.

Downstairs, a bright communal area offers plenty of tables and chairs, and doubles as the breakfast room. Breakfast is included in the room rate.

We spent a few nights at the Bicycle Hotel during our most recent hotel inspection trip. Our double with shared bath overlooked the street (and the hanging bicycle attached to the facade!) and was quite comfortable. It was the cheapest room of our trip — and probably the most comfortable.

The green-minded will spin for the Bicycle Hotel. Not only does the hotel maintain eco-friendly practices (solar power, recycling...), it also offers low-cost bike rentals so you can easily navigate the city.

Note that the hotel has steep stairs (and no elevator).

De Pijp may sit just to the east of Museumplein, but it's very different in temperament and culture. While Museumplein is upscale, De Pijp is scrappy. It was Amsterdam's very first suburb, and today it's home to large numbers of immigrants from Suriname, Morocco and Turkey. The neighborhood is also quite trendy, and home to one of the city's best bar scenes.

De Pijp also boasts the Albert Cuyp Market, which is not merely Amsterdam's largest and best-known public market, but also the largest public market in all of Europe. Another must-visit attraction is De Pijp's Sarphatipark, a lovely green oasis of a park plopped down in the center of the neighborhood.

Sleeping in the Pijp is a great option for travelers looking to stay in a "real" residential neighborhood, amongst the homes, shops and schools of actual residents. The area's restaurants and bars are among the city's most popular, and offer some real deals for budget travelers.
