The friendly Hotel Nicolaas Witsen is a polished and quiet place, offering comfortable three-star rooms at reasonable rates in a leafy spot not far from the Rijksmuseum and Heineken Experience.

The hotel is under the watchful eye of proprietor Alex Roozendaal, whose family has run the hotel since 1981. Recent renovations in 2022 have given the hotel a fresh new look and feel, with lots of color and pattern splashed throughout the rooms and common areas. Rooms at the front of the hotel look out on a quiet street, while rooms in back offer views of a neighborhood garden.

All rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, safe and coffee/tea facilities. All feature private baths that have also been renovated recently, with tiled walls and trendy checkered floors. Bathrooms are equipped with a hairdryer, toiletries and showers (some bathtubs are available).

Breakfast is sometimes included in the room rate (check when booking), and is served in the Witsen's lounge area, where you can also stop for a drink after a day out sightseeing.

Notably for a small Amsterdam hotel, the Nicolaas Witsen has an elevator.

Grachtengordel South

The most elegant area within the city center, Grachtengordel South (also referred to as the "Southern Canal Ring") features opulent residences, mansion-lined streets and a hot nightlife scene. The area boasts both Rembrandtplein (the city's one-time butter market) and Leidseplein (a former horse and buggy drop-off point). Both squares have been reborn as hot spots for bars, clubs, restaurants and no small number of tourist traps.

Choosing a hotel in the Southern Canal Ring will make things convenient when visiting Amsterdam, as you'll be close enough to the train station, and within an easy walk of most of the city's big sights. You should also consider hotels in the Western Canal Ring (or "Grachtengordel West"), which tends to be quieter.
