When we visited the Hotel Keizershof, Hanneke De Vries, the hotel's friendly proprietor, told us, "This is really a family place. We keep it all in the family." Indeed, the family vibe is palpable at this sweet three-star hotel, run by the same clan since 1959. That means good rates, a classy feel and a laid back, quirky atmosphere that will easily win over travelers looking for a quiet, unique place to stay.
The Hotel Keizershof’s four rooms are each named and decorated around a classic Hollywood movie star, and most are located on the top floor of a picture-perfect Dutch townhouse. All are relatively spacious for a hotel, and the furniture is mostly basic, with small wooden cabinets, simple beds, and art falling somewhere along the post-Impressionist spectrum. Wooden beams cross the ceiling, adding an extra dose of charm.
There are few amenities to list, but all rooms are equipped with a TV, free Wi-fi, and views of either the canal or the Keizershof’s own lush garden. (We like the “Charlie” room, overlooking a sumptuous slice of Amsterdam canal life.)
Bathrooms are straightforward (although one in the back has a lovely stained glass window), and all are spic-and-span. Each is equipped with a shower and hair dryer, and a couple share a toilet in the hallway.
Location-wise, the Hotel Keizershof is tops: You're between the Leidsestraat and the Vijzelgracht, putting many of the city's sights right outside your door. And history buffs will enjoy knowing that the 17th-century building, designed by famed French architect Jean Godin, was a frequent stop for the Dutch Royal family in the early 20th century.
Breakfast is included in the room rate. Be warned that the stairs are steep enough to frighten a seasoned Alpinist.

1.1km to city centerThe most elegant area within the city center, Grachtengordel South (also referred to as the "Southern Canal Ring") features opulent residences, mansion-lined streets and a hot nightlife scene. The area boasts both Rembrandtplein (the city's one-time butter market) and Leidseplein (a former horse and buggy drop-off point). Both squares have been reborn as hot spots for bars, clubs, restaurants and no small number of tourist traps.
Choosing a hotel in the Southern Canal Ring will make things convenient when visiting Amsterdam, as you'll be close enough to the train station, and within an easy walk of most of the city's big sights. You should also consider hotels in the Western Canal Ring (or "Grachtengordel West"), which tends to be quieter.
